We have worked with Essex County Council for many years and specifically the inward investment side of the organisation. From it’s initial guise as EXDRA (Essex Develeopment and Regeneration Agency) to it’s current incarnation as Invest Essex, for several years we’ve taken an active role in the development of their digital presence.
This new site represents an overhaul from their original site, now over 4 years old, and incorporates a cleaner, lighter design taking into consideration new emerging platforms and technologies (HTML5, tablets etc.).
However rather than just breaking out into Photoshop this new site represent several months of strategic development at the outset with a large consultancy project undertaken looking at the function of Invest Essex and it’s intended audiences wider perception of it as an organisation.
This approach (initially not intended to highlight the need for a new website) led to the realisation that the structure and format of the current site did not fit into the new organisations approach to doing business.
With an emphasis taken on building the digital facing side of the business using social media, this approach guided us to the IA and structure of the new site by taking a persona based approach.
A custom developed map, rebuilt from a legacy Flash version.
Built with Tilemill and Map Box using Open Street Map’s API and custom JQuery.
Along with the POI (Point of Interest) data the map also features sector clustering, showing where clusters of industry types are located around the county.
All of the content for the map is managed by the core CMS running the main site.
