Heres Matt’s report on the Sunday 16th August Dextro Triathlon…
“Today was HOT HOT HOT…
Killed the swim, 1560m in 25:58, those mass starts are interesting, lots of kicks to the face and the whole washing machine experience !!
Getting out of the water I had no idea where I was, completely disorientated, dizzy, utterly confused, weird feeling !
Transition - they went pretty smooth although I did lots of practise on these . Still room for improvement certainly on T1 ….
Bike not brilliant, need a lot of work on this (and new kickass carbon fibre bike) and my bike (rental) felt like it was fighting against me the whole time, weird , room for improvement here - 40km - 1:19:38
Run - a shocker, by lap 2 I wanted to pack it in(and it was a 5 lap course!), it was around lunchtime and hotter than hell and 1/2 the course was in bright sunshine I had to borrow Lucy’s Obama cap after the first lap. Really struggled here. Normally can do this distance in 45-50 minutes today 10km 1:06:53. In pieces, a real ,real struggle, legs felt like lead I think I failed to plan my nutrition and hydration properly as I didn’t take any gels on board so my body crashed on the run….
So the moral of the story is if you’re a good cyclist and runner you can do some damage on these triathlon things…
So for my age group - 37th out of 40 !
But 9th out of 40 in the swim !
All those years underwater were good for something.
Overall placed 254 of 294 for the Olympic distance. The run really ruined me.
At the end I was in pieces, NOTHING like the marathon or half marathon, this really took it out of me , I couldn’t stand up, definitely a carb deficit going on….You live and learn !!
So 2:57 just under 3 hours - http://london-itu.mikatiming.de/2009/index.php?content=detail&id=00001711DF215D0000001CBE&lang=EN&event=JO&ageclass=VET1 - A good PB to beat now …
OH and whoever says triathlon isn’t an extreme sport I saw some HORRENDOUS crashes today, mostly guys (and girls) on TT bikes that must have had high speed wipeouts as I saw more blood (in about 4 separate incidents) than I’ve ever seen on a downhill mountain bike day , really really nasty so glad to have not had to experience that at least !”
