Council Signage

A new blue sign suddenly appeared outside our tower. Another great example of councils taking no consideration for the environment and just plonking down any old sign. A couple of years ago we worked with Saatchi and Saatchi X and the Greengrid on producing a document specifically looking at this issue. The region of South Essex has a myriad of signage issues with all of the councils using their own distinct brand of signs which alongside the national signage, park wayfinding signage and commercial signage makes for a visual headache.
This just shows how council planners and designers have no vision or consideration for the environment when it involves thinking outside of their pre-conceived notion of town and urban planning - there’s no room for adaptation.
This could have been so much better - maybe a wooden style sign, keeping within the environment that its been put in, a totem pole would be great as the estate is like a small community, the pole could be used to post messages on it, it could become a feature of its environment rather than a blot on it. Going further it could have an MP3 playback that is updated with audio rather than cheesy posters put inside it.
At least try and create something sympathetic to the environment it’s placed in…
