Challenge
“South East England Climate Change Partnership” were in need of a new website and a refreshed brand image. The internal team at the partnership felt their identity was too wordy for succesful communication and the overall image of the brand needed an image refresh (they felt it seemed dated ).
Their website (their main communication platform for the organisation) whilst rich in content, also needed a re-think with regards to the message it was sending, the format of the content and also the overall look, feel and display of the content.
Solution
We ran an Information Architecture and branding workshop at the Partnerships HQ in Surrey using the Six Thinking Hats approach. This enabled us to quickly determine the problems of the brand image (felt internally and externally) as well as the information requirements of the new site and where it was felt it was lacking in dynamism and usability.
We recommended a graphical re-fresh of the brand , by limiting the colours (not just as an aesthetic tidy-up, but also considered in terms of saving of environmental wastage in minimising the ink use for future printed publications) and re-branding the organisation as simply “Climate South East”.
For the website we implemented an Expression Engine reworking of the site, enabling us to utilise a very powerful, full featured CMS with an absolutely fantastic framework for expandability and design integration . The new design also features more white space, partner case studies (to put a face to the organisation) and an entirely refreshed look and feel.
We also produced a series of printed banners and case studies for the Climate South East event in June 2008, which featured Tony Juniper from Friends of The Earth as a guest speaker, to tie in with the new image of the website and brand identity.
Results
The team are delighted with the simplicity of their new identity (in truth they hadn’t been using the full original identity in communication as they felt it too wieldy a name to use effectively). The site has been well received and is easily managed by the staff in-house.
