Our Responsibility

Our Responsibility

April 19th, 2008  |  Published in Ethics

First and foremost we are a business.

But that doesn’t mean we have to be ruthlessly driven by a balance sheet to the detriment of our working practices and ethics. In fact quite the opposite. If you look through our client list and portfolio of work you’ll see that quite a few of our clients are involved directly in environmental and social concerns.

We work with Greengrid South Essex, Natural Networks in Peterborough, Climate South East in Surrey, Natural England and Groundwork Essex.

So in our case going green doesn’t COST us money, it MAKES us money.

As such we’d be crazy if we didn’t take on-board the information we’re privy too from such a diverse range of highly knowledgeable organisations in order to build our own approach to doing business; and to share our knowledge by interpreting their work into the industry that we’re specialists in - marketing, design and digital communications.

“Oh here they come with their carbon off-setting policy !”

We hear what you’re saying.

Its easy to be cynical when every company these days seems to be bolting on their environmental credentials to their website and just really paying lip-service to it whilst their company directors continue to drive around in their 4×4’s (no we don’t drive 4×4’s).

Our directors actually have a wealth of experience in environmental matters, particularly those based around the ocean. In the 90’s they spent a considerable amount of time in the Pacific and Caribbean where they documented the effects of over-fishing and shark finning by the Asian fishing fleets, the consequences of global warming in coral bleaching, rising sea levels having a direct effect on their home in the Marshall Islands and most significantly the human, ecological, environmental and social impact on a nation by forced displacement on the people of Bikini by the US government for its nuclear testing program in the 40’s.

Their work during this period (photography, articles, filming and expedition reports) has been published and broadcast in dozens of magazines, newspapers, TV programs and charity and research organisations around the world.

Lucy was even featured on the front page of The Independent newspaper in 1997 on an article about global warming, long before “Global Warming” became a common meme in the English language.

Today as keen proponents of recreational outdoor activities, from snowboarding to SCUBA diving, surfing, running, camping, mountain biking, wildlife photography and sailing they are still very aware of the fragile nature of the planet and the importance we must all take in its future.

(Our work with Danny Crates and Greengrid, encouraging the local young people of Essex to take an interest in their environment:, to “Think About It”) :

So we’ve taken a long hard look at everything we do, what we can do better and what sort of information is out there that we can pass on to our other clients to ensure that their own businesses are adhering to the best environmental and socially responsible standards that they can. And they can either take these ideas on board or not. But as far as we’re concerned it’s an approach to business that’s working for us…

So this new section of our site is going to be all about best practices in design, digital management, marketing and communications. Looking at the environmental issues we take, the work we do with communities and groups and how we choose and work with our suppliers - and what you should be looking for too.
